Porto Alegre, October 14, 2020 – The planting of the new Brazilian soybean crop remains at a very slow pace in the country, which keeps the evolution of sowing behind the normal average for this time of year. The lack of moisture continues discouraging growers in the Midwest, Southeast, and part of the South region. In Mato Grosso do Sul, Goiás, and Minas Gerais only small areas with irrigation were sown. Growers remain concerned about the lack of rainfall and the risk of replanting.
According to a survey conducted by SAFRAS & Mercado, until October 9, Brazilian growers sowed 2.3% of the total area expected for the country. The percentage is equivalent to nearly 887 thousand hectares sown, out of a total of 37.940 million hectares estimated for planting in the country. In the previous week, the percentage was 1.5%. In the same period of the previous year, the percentage reached 9.5%, while the five-year average for the period is 9.6%.
In Paraná, 10% of the soybean area were sown, equivalent to around 560 thousand hectares out of a total of 5.6 million hectares estimated for the state. In the previous week, the percentage was 6%. In the same period last year, the percentage reached 25%, while the five-year average is 27.6% for the period.
In Mato Grosso, out of a total expected area of 10.21 million hectares, 3% have already been sown, equivalent to nearly 306 thousand hectares. The index hit 2% in the previous week, and 16% in the same period of the previous year. The five-year average for the period is 14.4%.
In Mato Grosso do Sul, out of a total area estimated at 3.08 million hectares, 0.3% have already been sown, equivalent to approximately 9 thousand hectares. In the previous week, the percentage was 0.2%. In the same period last year, the index was 7%, while the five-year average for the period is 12%.
In Goiás, out of a total expected area of 3.745 million hectares, 0.2% were sown, or nearly 7 thousand hectares. In the previous week, the percentage was 0.1%, while in the same period last year the percentage was 6%. The five-year average for the period is 4%.
In Minas Gerais, out of a total area estimated at 1.745 million hectares, 0.2% were sown, or approximately 3 thousand hectares. In the previous week, the percentage was 0.1%. In the same period last year, the percentage was 4%, while the five-year average for the period is 1.6%.
vWeather forecasts point to the arrival of a slightly moister period in the Midwest, Southeast, and part of the Southern region of the country between October 9 and 15, which will certainly be beneficial for soils and may encourage part of growers to speed up the work. Despite this moisture, the levels of accumulated rainfall must still be low.
