Soybean harvest picks up pace but remains very delayed in Brazil

         Porto Alegre, March 2, 2021 – The harvest of the new Brazilian soybean season is gaining a little more pace in the country. The state of Mato Grosso remains with better development, followed by the states of Goiás and São Paulo.

         The rather moist climate in the South, Southeast, parts of the Midwest, and especially in the North continue to prevent better progress in recent days. In the state of Tocantins, the problems caused by excessive rainfall have been severe.

         According to a survey carried out by SAFRAS & Mercado, until February 26, 22.5% of a total sown area of ​​38.610 million tons were reaped, equivalent to approximately 8.704 million hectares. In the previous week, the index 12.4%. In the same period last year, 39.6% of the area had already been reaped, while the five-year average for the period is 35.3%.

         In Paraná, out of a total area of ​​5.6 million hectares sown, 11% were reaped, or the equivalent to nearly 616 thousand hectares. In the previous week, the index was 5%. In the same period last year, 45% were already reaped, while the five-year average for the period is 39%.

         In Mato Grosso, out of a total sown area of ​​10.3 million hectares, 52% were reaped, or approximately 5.356 million hectares. In the previous week, the index was 34%. In the same period last year, 80% had already been reaped. The five-year average for the period is 65.7%.

         In Minas Gerais, out of a total area estimated at 1.82 million hectares, 23% were reaped, or nearly 419 thousand hectares. In the previous week, the index was 9%. In the same period of the previous year, the percentage reaped reached 21%. The five-year average for the period is 24.8%.

         Weather forecasts point to greater rainfall over the entire North, Southeast, Northeast and parts of the Midwest regions until February 28. In the main producing provinces of Argentina, the maps show little rainfall. In the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, light precipitation is expected, which may continue to contribute to the advancement of machines. In the other states of the Midwest, North, Northeast, and Southeast, moisture remains high, which must continue to prevent better harvest progress.

         In the period between March 1 and 7, moisture must remain in practically the whole country, with more intensity in the North Region.
